“Reformed Baptist”?
Reformed Baptist churches are independent, congregational, local churches who hold to the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith and are governed by a plurality of elders and deacons. They often are described by three terms; “reformed”, “historic” and “confessional”. They are “reformed” in that they are committed to the principles and doctrines of the Scriptures as taught during the great Reformation of the 16th century, namely the five solas and the doctrines of grace. They could also rightly be called “historic” in that they embrace the beliefs and polity that the earliest Baptists developed as they established churches in England during the 17th century. These Baptist churches wrote summaries of their beliefs, one of the most notable was written in 1644 and a more detailed statement was written and adopted by the churches in 1689. It is now commonly called the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith. Our church holds to one of the oldest and most widely used Baptist
Confessions of Faith. The 1689 Baptist confession is a Baptist version of the Savoy Declaration of the Congregationalist churches and the Westminster Confession of Faith of the Presbyterian Church. Even though this confession is over three hundred years old Reformed Baptists believe it to be a very accurate statement of biblical teaching. So in this sense Reformed Baptist churches could also be called “confessional” in that they teach the doctrines found in these confessions of faith.
Reformed Baptist churches hold a high view of God and believe that the Bible teaches that God directs all events. As such they believe that God has not only provided salvation for us as a free gift, but that He also is sovereign in the conversion of sinners. This gives great confidence in spreading the gospel in that they believe God will draw men to Himself through the proclamation of the gospel.
